'... globalisation involves the use of a variety of instruments of homogenization (armaments, advertising techniques, language hegemonies and clothing styles) which are absorbed into local political and cultural economies only to be repatriated as heterogenous dialogues of national sovereignty, free enterprise and fundamentalism...'
- arjun appadurai
the historical presence of a dominant ideology (capitalism), camouflaged and silently manifested in seemingly benign states, has grown rapidly in scale and volume. the intensification, multiplication and mobility of information, capital and goods, stratified in the transnational integration of the world's economies, signal a cancerous metastasis, systemically eroding the already critical state of health of our planet as the century draws to a close. the cultivated culture of greed (in vitro) and consumption, genetically engineered by only a powerful few, is significantly responsible for the chronic pathological infections affecting most parts and, in particular, its late malignancy in the periphery of the neo/post-colonial third world. the increased migration of disease to new sites of rupture, of violence and poverty, uncontrolled population growth and serious environmental destruction have reached global proportions and need to be critically addressed by everyone living on this planet. we believe that art can still contribute to encouraging creative ways of thinking and looking at serious contemporary social afflictions and inspire a heightened sense of awareness that can eventually propel all us towards concrete action and enable us to rise above ignorance and apathy.
